These are eight pictures of people in crisis. Often, the crisis is deadly, but the dire circumstance and danger are not what make these stories captivating. It's the response.The book begins at the end of the war. Just any old war, for we never learn much about the causes in the struggle, nor discover whom we would root for if we did know. Rojas, in the title story, is long beyond deciding or caring about causes, and leaders, or strategies. He cares for, and yearns for, a much more personal redemption in ordinary love and ordinary life, freed from causes, campaigns, insurgents.
The reader will not find it unusual to discover either heroism or exhaustion in war. Nonetheless, these qualities continue to emerge through stories that are very widely situated. There is danger everywhere. There are heroes everywhere, as well, whom the reader meets in places as disparate as a battlefield, a jail cell, high school English classroom, or at the mall.
The wide variety of settings and circumstances provides a continued exploration of the central theme. Integrity appears everywhere, often surprisingly, and rarely within the characters of the persons where it is most expected. These are stories of minor players who insert major influence We do know that the morality counts, though its exercise can be very risky, indeed.
This reviewer has read many of the stories in manuscript, for I know the author. I have been tempted to describe them, from time to time, as "Kafkaesque." On rereading the collection as a whole, I realize that that characterization is incorrect. These are not stories of people captured in worlds they cannot understand. They are, instead, people wrestling with commonplace worlds, and doing so with the ordinary means and extraordinary courage that are available to us all.
These are people and stories that will captivate, challenge, and often amuse the reader. They will also leave one hoping for the last day of many wars, some of them just around every corner.

Richard Fricker has a long, brilliant history of being a fine writer of non-fiction and his short stories are refreshingly original and thought-provoking. His multi-cultural experiences provide him with a global perspective that makes these stories unforgettable. I recommend that you read each one with particular care and savor his words.
